A limousine operator was arrested at Albany International Airport for operating his stretch limo illegally on Jan. 2, according to a spokesperson from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Investigators arrested Daniel Garhartt, accusing him of allegedly registering his vehicle for personal use, then attempting to use it to transport unsuspecting passengers, officials said.

Garhartt, who operated Classic Transportation Service, is being charged with offering a false instrument for filing and falsifying business records, felonies, along with a misdemeanor false written statement and a ticket for driving an uninspected vehicle. He is accused of submitting paperwork for a 2005 Cadillac stating he would not use it for-hire, officials said. In doing so, he avoided the requirement to buy for-hire insurance. He also allegedly indicated the vehicle had been properly inspected. Investigators discovered advertisements offering to transport customers, but he didn’t have the proper insurance, registration or inspection, officials noted.

Garhartt’s driver’s license was suspended and his limousine was impounded and towed from the airport. The arrest comes amid continued focus on limousine safety after two deadly crashes in New York State in 2015 and 2018.
