A new study from Injured in Florida revealed the states where intersections pose the greatest danger to pedestrians. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2017-2021 regarding fatal crashes involving pedestrians put New York in second place nationwide. While there are no definitive answers, theories included LED headlights, automatic vehicles, the aging American population, and the proliferation of smartphones. Nationally, pedestrian fatalities occur at intersections 17.2% of the time, but in New York State 31% (or more than 1,300 pedestrian fatalities) occurred at intersections.
