The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) reached a tentative agreement with the New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) regarding the issuance of new electric vehicle (EV) licenses. The settlement followed a lawsuit by the NYTWA, which argued that the TLC’ plan to issue unlimited EV licenses could lead to market oversaturation and increased competition among drivers. Under the proposed agreement, the TLC will issue a limited number of new for-hire vehicle licenses in phases, rather than an open-ended rollout. Applicants will not be required to own or purchase a vehicle before being selected for a license. The TLC will determine the timeframe for applicants to provide vehicle-specific information after selection. The agreement was pending approval by a state judge, as of May.
