The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA’s) Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) program is currently active on dozens of bus routes, but additional routes are now being added monthly. The system uses bus-mounted cameras to issue violations to vehicles improperly using bus lanes and busways, as well as to vehicles that are double parked along bus corridors or blocking bus stops.

The NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) warned its licensees in June that, “Violations will be issued to registered vehicle owners only after two separate buses confirm the vehicle obstructed the designated area beyond the allowable time limit. Double parking violations will be recorded if a vehicle is observed for more than 2.5 minutes. Bus lane violations will be recorded after 5 minutes. Any vehicle exceeding these grace periods will be issued a violation.”

On each new ACE bus route, the MTA and the City issue warning notices 60 days prior to fine-bearing violations. Signs warning of new photo enforcement zones are placed along ACE corridors and on side streets. Fines start at $50 and increase by $50 for each additional violation, up to a maximum of $250/violation. Unpaid fines can result in additional fees and vehicles can be booted, towed, or have their registration blocked. Drivers can contest violations if they believe they were issued in error by following the instructions on their notice to request a hearing.
