United Airlines wants federal aviation officials to extend cuts to the number of hourly flights allowed into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport through at least the summer of 2026, due to a chronic shortage of air traffic controllers and multiple equipment failures, according to a new Trump administration memo.

Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) denied the request, saying such an extension goes beyond the current process of planned flight cuts. In June, the FAA announced it is implementing its latest phase of planned flight reductions at Newark June 16 to Oct. 25 to allow no more than 68 total flights per hour – 34 arrivals and 34 departures – to ease congestion. Flights will be capped at 28 flights each for arrivals and departures per hour, on weekends Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, when a $121 million rehabilitation project continues exclusively on weekends.
