Across New York City, 99% of the city’s Uber and Lyft drivers found themselves “locked out” of their app at one time or another this summer, suddenly and unexpectedly unable to work, according to data released by the Independent Drivers Guild (IDG) in Sept. Under pressure from the IDG and city leaders, Uber and Mayor Adams announced in July the company would immediately begin reducing lockouts and end them by early Sept. However, new data from the IDG showed the lockouts continued, with 98% of drivers reporting app lockouts in August.
The new report from the IDG is based on a survey of more than 3,000 New York City for-hire vehicle (FHV) drivers, conducted August 26-29, 2024. Read the full survey results – including drivers’ comments about the devastation and personal trauma the lockouts caused – at https://driversguild.org/lockoutsurvey/ .
In response, the IDG launched the IDG NYC lockouts task force to closely track and report on Uber and Lyft driver lockouts, hold the app companies accountable, and advocate for a permanent end to the unfair lockouts disrupting the livelihoods of the city’s 80,000 app-hail drivers.
