The NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) has removed retirement dates for medallion owners with Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) and set new accessibility standards for For-Hire Vehicles (FHVs).

According to the TLC, “With no set vehicle retirement date, medallion owners will have the ability to operate their WAVs for longer periods of time without having to purchase a new vehicle, as long as the vehicle continues to pass its scheduled TLC inspections.” The rule change is expected to increase WAV accessibility for riders and reduce costs for the medallion industry.

New accessibility standards were also implemented for For-Hire Vehicles (FHVs). FHVs are now subject to the same accessibility standards as accessible medallion vehicles. Any new FHV accessible vehicles must now be on the approved vehicle list, which is available at: https://www.nyc.gov/site/tlc/vehicles/accessible-vehicle-requirements.page.
