The MTA and law enforcement officials arrested 50 drivers and seized 192 vehicles from serial toll evaders in June. Officers issued 1,809 summonses. The group collectively amassed $1.5 million in unpaid fees using so-called “ghost” license plate covers that block toll readers. The operation is clawing back revenue after Gov. Kathy Hochul’s surprise congestion pricing implementation pause.
Transit officials, the NYPD and other law enforcement partners seized vehicles for a mix of violations including unpaid tolls, unregistered vehicles and suspended licenses, among other traffic infractions on June 14, 15 and 17 on six MTA bridges, including the Robert F. Kennedy, Willis Avenue and Third Avenue spans.
