A new report from the American Lung Association (ALA) shows the huge health benefits of a nationwide shift to electric vehicles (EVs) and clean energy. Dramatically cutting pollution could prevent up to 89,300 premature deaths through 2050 – although lawmakers, automakers, and utility companies would have to rise to the occasion. The US would have to sell only emissions-free vehicles by 2035. The report factors in existing “gas guzzler” cars remaining on the road.
There would also be 2.2 million fewer asthma attacks over the same period. The health benefits add up to $978 billion and 10.7 million fewer lost workdays over the next few decades. Transportation is among the biggest sources air pollution in the US, where 120 million people live with unhealthy air quality, according to the ALA.
