Modern electric vehicle (EV) batteries are lasting significantly longer than many industry experts predicted, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. Data from battery analytics company Recurrent shows that the avrage EV retains up to 95% of its original driving range after five years on the road. This new data could put to rest some concerns that have hindered EV adoption.

Battery replacement rates have also fallen sharply as technology has improved, with just 0.3% of EVs built since 2022 requiring a battery replacement, compared with roughly one in 12 vehicles produced between 2011 and 2016. The findings suggest advances in battery  chemistry,  thermal  management systems and software have significantly improved longevity, allowing many modern EVs to remain suitable for long-distance driving even after several hundred thousand miles.

Despite the progress, surveys continue to show that fears over battery replacement costs are the main reason many buyers hesitate to purchase EVs, even though the technology has dramatically improved in recent years. Researchers  say  replacement  costs  have also declined as more automakers allow individual battery modules to be repaired instead of replacing an entire battery pack. Battery prices have fallen by more than 90% since 2010, further improving the long-term economics of EV use.

Charging habits still play an important role in battery health. Frequent high-power DC fast charging and regularly charging batteries to 100% can accelerate battery degradation,  while  moderate  charging practices preserve driving range over time.
