A 31-year-old Brooklyn man has been sentenced to a five-year prison term after leading multiple police agencies on a three-hour chase that began in midtown Manhattan on June 1, 2025 at about 9:22am. Ashton Charles, 31, of Brooklyn, was sentenced on June 29 for stealing a taxicab, driving it across the Hudson River, continuing on several major roadways and striking several NJ State Police vehicles before ending on Route 22 when he collided with a Somerville Police car.
Charles will serve his term in a New Jersey State Prison, with 85% of the sentence to be served without eligibility for parole, pursuant to the No Early Release Act. Charles entered guilty pleas to five counts of second-degree Causing Injury While Eluding or Operating a Stolen Motor Vehicle on May 8, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
