A Bronx driver who allegedly killed a livery cab driver while speeding 77 mph in a 25 mph zone before fleeing the scene two years ago will now face justice, after her DNA was found on an airbag, the Bronx District Attorney announced in Aug. Imani Williams, 36, was arraigned on second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of the accident, criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving charges, for the fatal June 5, 2022 hit-and-run, according to prosecutors. In addition to driving three times the speed limit, “she fled the scene without checking on the driver’s condition or waiting for first responders to arrive,” DA Darcel Clark said.
The Bronx resident was allegedly using the bus lane to whiz past another vehicle and ran a red light before striking the driver’s side of the car of Robert Godwin, 45, a livery cab driver. Williams allegedly pulled herself out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Investigators were able to lift a DNA sample from the driver’s side airbag, which was determined to be Williams in February. She has been granted supervised release with electronic monitoring before returning to court on Oct. 29. Godwin, of Queens, suffered critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
