The Flushing Commons parking garage, in Queens, was converted into an electric vehicle (EV) charging hub. The garage is centrally located near several shops, restaurants and Citi Field, so the owner decided to install 424 plugins that anyone can access, as long as they pay to park ($16 for four hours). For as little as 45 cents per kilowatt hour, drivers can at least partially charge their car battery while the garage operator collects the revenue and maintains the chargers. The chargers are designed to take vehicles from empty to 80% full in between 4 and 10 hours, depending on the type of vehicle battery. Later this year, the owner, Abe Moshel, plans to install three ultra-fast chargers that can top off a typical car battery in under an hour. If they’re popular, he plans to install more.
