The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) held a public hearing on July 16, to discuss the current taxi rate of fare. The hearing offered a platform for public comment, but no proposed rules were on the agenda. The TLC has not indicated when it might initiate formal rulemaking. Topics included:

  • The need to consider passengers and the broader public, not just driver perspectives, when deciding whether to increase fares
  • Driver concerns about credit card processing fees and retaining the current $3 flag drop fee
  • Intent to petition for a fare increase, since the 2022 fare hike failed to achieve a projected 30% revenue gain, thanks in part to the high cost of WAVs and credit card transaction fees (paid by medallion owners, not drivers)
  • Clearer door rate stickers and public education on MTA surcharges
