Due to an air traffic controller shortage and equipment malfunctions at Newark Liberty International Airport this spring, 20.9% fewer fliers traveled through the airport in May compared to the same time last year, new data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey shows. In May, roughly 3.49 million passengers flew into and out of Newark – a decrease of more than 1 million passengers year over year, compared to 2024.

The Port Authority’s Sarah McKeon said she’s hopeful the airport will see “some modest improvements” as airlines increase the capacity of some flights by squeezing in additional seats, in an attempt to make do with Federal Aviation Administration limits that went into effect in June on the number of flights that arrive and depart Newark hourly. Those limits are in place until at least Oct. 25. FAA officials plan to reassess the airport in the fall to potentially lift the limits and boost capacity.
