NYC nightlife generates $31.5 billion a year and employs almost 300,000 people. The city’s Office of Nightlife recently issued a series of guidelines to help partiers avoid trouble, including:

  • Make sure your phone is charged and carry a small portable charger.
  • Groups of people should organize a group text for the evening.
  • Always share your location (and the names of fellow partiers) with someone you trust. Keep location on your phone turned on.
  • Keep your drink is in your line of sight at all times to avoid roofies. If you turn away from the bar for a long period of time, order another drink.
  • Stay alert. Know your surroundings and your exits in case of emergency.
  • Know your limit. Don’t drink alcohol excessively and stay hydrated.
  • Prevent an overdose: Check for fentanyl with test strips and carry naloxone.
  • Get and give consent for sexual interactions. Use protection.
  • Be a good bystander: Intervene if you witness harassment.
  • Have a plan to get home safe: Never leave with a stranger without telling someone you know.
  • Check license plates on your for-hire vehicle before you get in.
