Taxi industry advocates are offering a cash reward for info about a “tap and snatch” crew that ripped off 22 drivers in 22 precincts during an eight-week crime spree recently. Drivers’ phones were seized and cash was wired to the crooks through apps like Zelle and Venmo. Other times, the robbers asked to see the driver’s phone so they could type in an address or destination change – then ran off with the phone, NYPD said. One unfortunate victim lost $7,000.
The crew either hails a cab or just jumps in the back seat when the driver slows down, NYPD said. The State Federation of Taxi Drivers is offering $2,000 to anyone who can tell officials who’s behind the crimes.
