The Justice for App Workers coalition joined the call for a National Day of Action, with a rally and strike at LaGuardia Airport on February 14, to protest “the ever-increasing corporate greed of the nation’s app companies.” According to the coalition, New York drivers are fighting for the following:

  • Compensation for lost earnings due to app lockouts and stronger protections against future ones
  • A pay increase that reflects the rising cost of living in NYC
  • Limits on new FHV licenses to protect their wages and job security
  • Fair insurance rates and coverage for drivers
  • Accessible relief stands & legal parking zones
  • More EV charging stations
  • An end to unfair ticketing that targets drivers and delivery workers
  • Higher pay for SHL medical trips to cover high insurance rates
  • An autonomous vehicle ban for safety reasons and to protect NYC jobs

The Justice for App Workers coalition, which represents over 100,000 app-hail and delivery drivers in New York, is comprised of the following partner organizations: the Independent Drivers Guild, Long Island Uber and Lyft Network, United Delivery Worker Association, UzBer, International Alliance of Delivery Workers, UTANY, Black Car Mafia, NYC Rideshare Club and NOMAD.

“This day of action serves as a powerful reminder of the human toll behind the algorithms and policies governing these platforms,” the association stated. “Workers hope to highlight the urgent need for regulations to safeguard their rights and livelihoods in the digital age… [and] call out the insatiable corporate greed of America’s app companies.”
