A drunk passenger in a yellow cab pummeled and choked the driver before hijacking his vehicle during an argument over the fare, police said in January. The passenger, identified as Mame Gueye, age 25, was riding in the back of the yellow cab when his card was declined. He said he wasn’t going to pay, cops said, so the driver stopped his taxi near Lexington Ave. and E. 23rd St. at about 10:30pm on January 28, and asked Gueye to get out. Gueye refused, cops said, then pulled the driver out of the cab and pummeled him – choking and punching him numerous times. He then jumped behind the wheel and sped off down Lexington Ave.

Police quickly reached out to the cab company, which tracked the stolen vehicle with GPS to Madison Ave. near 78th St. When they arrived at the location, Gueye was just getting out of the vehicle. Officers pursued him on foot, catching him at 79th St. and Park Ave.

The cab driver refused medical attention. Gueye was transported to a nearby hospital for observation, and now faces a slew of charges, including robbery, assault and criminal obstruction of breathing. He has one prior arrest from March 2023 for driving while intoxicated, police said.
