Autonomous car company, Waymo, has received an extension to continue its pilot program in Manhattan – “through the end of the year, at the very least.” The Department of Transportation granted Waymo access to city streets, as long as an operator is in the driver’s seat for the tests. The program has sparked outrage among local taxi and livery drivers as a potential threat to their jobs.

“Why risk the lives of New Yorkers for a dangerous experimental system that is seeking to eliminate the jobs of 100,000 New Yorkers?” Brendan Sexton, President of the Independent Drivers Guild, said in August.
