In November, Eric Chipman became the 5th generation of his family to work in the taxicab business when he was named Vice President of the Westway Agency of New York, Inc. A recent Cornell University graduate, Eric started working summers at the company eight years ago, at the age of 16.

“Eric is a fast learner and he already has a significant amount of industry experience,” explained Eric’s father, Richard Chipman, President of Westway. “Particularly if you are a driver new to the industry, it’s essential to consult with someone who knows the ins-and-outs of the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission’s complicated regulations.”

According to Richard, New York City’s insurance renewal season is underway, with all renewals due by March 1 – so he recommends starting the process as soon as possible, particularly with so many businesses short-staffed due to Covid.

“The longer you wait, the less time your broker will have to shop around and get you the best possible rate,” said Richard, who has been a licensed broker since 1978. “Most people wait until the last minute, which further complicates things and makes them take longer than they should.”

“This renewal season is going to be a real learning experience for me,” added Eric, who previously focused primarily on medallion sales, another service Westway provides. “Business is already starting to pick up and I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many talented and knowledgeable people.”
