A federal judge, in Jan., ruled against the Trump administration’s freeze on a $5 billion program meant to fund an electric vehicle (EV) charger network. Judge Tana Lin barred the Department of Transportation from revoking previously approved state EV charger deployment plans, and from withholding funds for the plans.
In February 2025, the Trump administration sent a letter revoking the state plans. It also froze the funds for the program, which was passed under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Twenty states and Washington, D.C. sued over the move. Lin said the letter went beyond the administration’s authority, was arbitrary and capricious, and did not follow proper procedure.
The ruling comes as lawmakers are considering legislation to redirect nearly $900 million in federal EV charger funds. Experts say the nation should shift toward EVs, to reduce pollution and lower the risks of climate change. Increasing charger availability is considered an essential part of that effort.
