Suffolk County Supreme Court Judge Maureen T. Liccione handed down summary judgment against dozens of defendants in a massive auto insurance fraud case that exposed a sophisticated criminal network operating in Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island and New Jersey. The ruling, along with proposals from Gov. Kathy Hochul, is expected to help curb the high cost of car insurance in New York State.
The ruling determined that Integon National Insurance Company successfully demonstrated that eight “accidents” that occurred between March and July 2023 were deliberately staged as part of a coordinated fraud operation.
“These fake accidents take their toll on law-abiding drivers,” said former New York City Taxi & Limousine Commissioner, Matthew W. Daus, Esq. “All the drivers applied for insurance through the same broker, each ‘accident’ involved exactly three occupants, and all the incidents occurred within 45 days of the policy being issued. Furthermore, the passengers gave conflicting testimonies.”
