Long Island’s Suffolk County has initiated a new crackdown on unlicensed limousines and for-hire vehicles, targeting drivers that do not carry the appropriate insurance, are not registered with the state Department of Transportation, and have no safety equipment. Vehicles must also bear the proper license plates, and drivers must be appropriately licensed. The enforcement initiative comes a decade after a tragic crash in Cutchogue during a wine tasting trip, when a limousine was T-boned as the driver made a dangerous U-turn. As part of the recent crackdown, two companies and three drivers have been summonsed and fined $11,000.
