New York City’s controversial congestion pricing toll is helping to boost subway ridership, according to a report by the PCAC for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Ridership on the biggest U.S. subway system reached 1.28 billion last year, a 7.7% increase from a year earlier. Despite last year’s uptick, total ridership remains at about 75% of pre-pandemic levels.

Most of the gains came from weekend and discretionary travel. Weekend ridership gained nearly 22 million rides, a 9.4% jump from a year ago, the report said. Morning rush hour subway rides into the tolled area in Manhattan went up by a daily average of 7% and weekend trips into the zone gained an average of 7.5%.
