The New York Black Car Fund opened a new, state-of-the-art Driver Safety Center in August, at 37-10 Skillman Ave. in Long Island City. The new location features free indoor parking for drivers enrolled in the Fund’s safety and wellness classes (up to capacity). Please note that the previous location on Crescent Street was shuttered in early August.

Every eligible driver affiliated with a Black Car Fund base can receive a one-time $300 compensation for taking The Fund’s safety course, between now and May 31, 2025.

On August 8, Amnon Oberlander took on the role of Director of Education at the center. An industry veteran who has been in the transportation industry since 1979, Mr. Oberlander served in management positions at numerous black car companies, as well as serving nine years as a board member at the Fund and 14 years as a board member for the Black Car Assistance Corp.

He will conduct in-person classes at the new Skillman Ave. facility and drivers will also have the option to take classes online. Topics will include safe driving techniques, avoiding accidents, how to make a claim in the event of an injury and drivers benefits, among other essential tips.

“The most important thing we can remind our industry’s drivers is the importance of driving defensively and doing their best to avoid any kind of accident – especially ones that might involve an injury,” noted Overlander. “We also remind participants about the many free and discounted health benefits available to them through the Fund.”

Safety Classes are held on most Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:00am to 6:00pm. They are taught at two locations: The Black Car Safety Center Skillman Ave facility and the Independent Drivers Guild Center at 41-09 36th St. #3, Long Island City NY 11101.
