MV Transportation is winding down a $423 million contract with New York state to operate Access-A-Ride services in the city. The company is laying off 251 of its 300 workers at its Manhattan and Staten Island facilities early next year, according to plans filed with the Department of Labor.

The layoffs, set to take effect Feb. 10, come as the company wraps up a five-year contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to operate Access-A-Ride services offered to travelers with disabilities. MV is one of the MTA’s larger Access-A-Ride contractors, which includes agreements with Queens-based CareRide and New Rochelle-headquartered Premier Paratransit.

MV has run paratransit services in the city for the MTA since 2001. Rachel Cohen, the MTA’s acting vice president of paratransit, implied in a statement to Crain’s that the contractor’s performance factored into the contract expiration. The MTA said it does not expect Access-A-Ride service to be adversely impacted by MV Transportation’s departure from the program.
