A bill introduced by state Sen. Patricia Fahy would bring autonomous vehicles (AVs) taxis to Albany and Rensselaer counties. The company has encountered several roadblocks entering New York, including stiff opposition from labor unions, unfavorable public opinion polls and legislative skepticism.
Fahy’s bill would allow AVs in the Albany area to serve as a pilot program before a potential expansion in the state. It would stay in effect until July 1, 2028, if passed. Companies would be required to provide proof of insurance for AVs and be held liable for any traffic violations.
News of the legislation arrived as News12 reported that four women climbed into a Waymo for the first time and discovered a knife wedged into the back seat armrest, blade facing outward, clearly seeking to harm the next passenger. The company says it is reviewing who was the previous passenger.
