New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin appointed Council Member Shaun Abreu to serve as the new chair of its Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Abreu replaces Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers (D-Queens), who chaired the committee for the past four years. Brooks-Powers has been reassigned to chair the Criminal Justice Committee.
Abreu said he would bring a “people first approach” to his role chairing the Transportation Committee, which provides critical oversight to the city’s Department of Transportation, as well as other transportation-related agencies.
