New York State’s Department of Transportation is embarking on a controversial project to widen the Van Wyck Expressway, which sees 170,000 vehicles daily between the Kew Gardens Interchange and JFK airport. The $1.3 billion effort will add a fourth lane in both directions, transforming it from six to eight lanes of traffic along a four-mile stretch. The project also requires ramps and some bridges to be reconfigured. Construction is expected to be complete by 2025.
