Every day is different with this job. That’s why I enjoy being a chauffeur so much!
Regular Runs
Typically, I drive executives to and from Newark, Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports from and to their homes or their offices. Sometimes I pick up people at cruise ship terminals in Bayonne, NJ and Manhattan, NY.
Special Occasions
People will often hire us to drive a group of four, five or six into Manhattan for dinner and a show. This is smart because it eliminates any chance of getting a DUI if the driver of the group had a few drinks at dinner. Also, parking in The Big Apple in a garage is very expensive. This limousine service can turn out to be very cost-effective for the customer.
I’ve driven passengers to various concerts as well in New York and New Jersey. That is a very fun crowd.
Occasionally, I have driven people on their wedding day. More rarely, I have driven people to funerals to say their final good-bye.
All of these experiences make being a chauffeur interesting, and I learn something new each time.
Recently, I have added two new aspects to this job: back up to the shuttle bus and school bus!
Shuttle Bus Back Up
We have clients who hire us to have shuttle buses pick them up and bring them to and from the office. These Sprinter vans carry 10 to 12 people. Sometimes there is overflow, and there might be 16 people needing a ride to or from their office.
Since my 2024 Cadillac Escalade can carry six people, my company has dispatched me (or another chauffeur driving an SUV), to handle the overflow of from one to six people, instead of dispatching another Sprinter van.
School Bus
Every now and then, my company will dispatch me to pick up high school students in the morning from their homes and take them to their high school in Westchester County, NY. Sometimes I pick them up at their school and drive them home, making between one and five stops in Bergen County, NJ.
I have driven three “teams” of students on various days. On two separate days, I only drove one student home because the other students had after-school activities. I have often wondered, “Why don’t they just have a regular yellow school bus bring them?” I’m not complaining, just curious. Maybe there isn’t a contract in place to do this.
I like these high school bus rides because it is a welcome change from the regular airport drop-offs and pick-ups. The students are friendly, polite and generally quiet.
The moral of this Street Story is that the more you can adapt to and welcome change, the more versatile you will be. Having a wide array of experiences expands your horizons and can teach you a few things in the process.
