New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the return of the city’s annual “Dusk and Darkness” traffic enforcement and education campaign to keep “all road users” safe during the fall and winter – which includes the expansion of NYPD traffic enforcement of dangerous moving violations during evening and overnight hours.
Starting in the fall, evening rush hour occurs when sunlight and visibility are dramatically reduced, leading to a spike in fatal crashes. NYPD officers are being deployed on highways and local streets, with an increased focus on dangerous driving behaviors – including speeding, failure to yield, distracted driving (cell phone usage), double-parking and blocking bike and bus lanes.
TLC reminds for-hire vehicle drivers to use extra caution during low-visibility periods, including driving 25 miles per hour, unless otherwise posted.
