Veteran Uber driver, Shohel Mahmud, was transporting two passengers on the Upper East Side on July 31, when 23-year-old Jennifer Guilbeault suddenly stood up in the backseat, yelling, and pepper-sprayed him in the face. Guilbeault and her friend had reportedly been quietly sitting in the back when the incident – described by police as an unprovoked attack – occurred at around 11:30pm.

Mahmud – a Bangladeshi father of three – claims the attack was racially motivated, adding that he feared his car was about to be hijacked. Guilbeault denies the allegation that it was a hate crime, but offered no other explanation after she was arrested at the scene by NYPD officers and charged with assault. The incident was caught on camera.

Uber told PIX11 News that Guilbeault has been banned from the app, stating, “The rider’s actions shown in the video are deplorable. Violence is not tolerated.”
