New York City officials, in October, announced a plan to license 1,000 new for-hire vehicles (FHVs), but only for drivers of electric vehicles (EVs). They will be the first new FHVs licensed by the Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) since 2018.

“We are excited to be issuing these new licenses, which will encourage development of the city’s [EV] infrastructure and help move our city towards a more sustainable future,” explained TLC Chair David Do.

Vehicle eligibility details have yet to be determined, so the TLC recommends holding off on making a purchase until specifics are released. The TLC noted that FHV trip volumes are nearing pre-pandemic levels, while passenger wait times have remained steady and trips and driver pay are continuing to increase.
