New York City plans to add nearly 1,000 new electric vehicle (EV) charging points across all five boroughs – including 600 curbside chargers – over the next three years. The city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) said the new curbside chargers can charge an EV battery in a few hours, and will be installed based on residential density, off-street parking availability, and whether the area is frequented by licensed taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers.
The first chargers will go online in Soundview and Unionport, in the Bronx; Rego Park, Forest Hills, and Far Rockaway, in Queens; Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, in Brooklyn; the Upper West Side and Washington Heights, in Manhattan; and Stapleton, on Staten Island, with more to come. The new curbside stations will have at least two stalls, each with two charging points. NYC is also installing 92 DC fast chargers and 180 new Level 2 charging points at its Municipal Parking Fields and Municipal Parking Garages. Drivers will be able to use a variety of apps or a credit card to pay for the energy dispensed, according to the DOT.
