Taxi and For-Hire Vehicle (FHV) drivers delivered nearly six million free meals to senior citizens and disabled people between March 16 and April 17, according to newly appointed “food czar,” Kathryn Garcia. The $170 million program was designed to ensure New York City residents have enough food amid job losses and stay-at-home orders.
The city has also been handing out 250,000 free meals a day at schools to anyone who needs them. Even before the crisis, 1.2 million city residents struggled at times to feed themselves.
