New York posted one of the largest year-over-year declines he country for car insurance, falling 13% since June 2025. That translated into average annual savings of roughly $431 per driver, according to Insurify. Despite the recent rate drop, New York remains one of the country’s 10 most expensive states for car insurance, so experts point to additional ways to save even more.
- Shop around to lower costs. Comparing rates at renewal time can help save money and should be a regular part of managing insurance costs.
- Raise your deductible. It lowers premiums because the higher the deductible, the less the insurance company has to pay when a claim is filed.
- Try telematics for a discount. Many insurance companies offer discounts on “usage-based insurance,” which is tracked using an app or plug-in device that monitors mileage, driving habits, speed, and more.
- Bundle home and auto coverage with the same insurance company. It often provides significant savings.
- Maintain a clean driving record. It lowers rates, although a careless at-fault accident or speeding ticket can lead to a rate increase.
- Take advantage of available discounts. Ask about student discounts, senior discounts, military and veteran discounts, as well as discounts for safe driving, taking a defensive driving course, or enrolling in traffic school.
