Starting January 1, 2022, all TLC-Licensed Drivers must complete a continuing education course as a requirement for renewing their TLC Driver License. The purpose of the course is to provide professional and practical hands-on training to support their work as professional drivers and enhance public safety.

Thousands of drivers responded to a survey the TLC issued last spring. They asked for more training on customer service, safe driving skills, and tips for earning more money. The TLC incorporated feedback from drivers, as well as industry partners to create a course that includes the following topics:

  • How to use TLC online services such as LARS and TLCUP
  • What to do if a driver gets a ticket
  • Major rules and policies such as driver pay
  • Tips for providing great service for customers
  • Ways to help customers with disabilities and practicing wheelchair accessible vehicle operations

All TLC-Licensed Drivers are included – except paratransit and commuter van operators. The TLC Driver License Renewal Course is six hours long and must be completed to renew a TLC Driver License.

The course will be available in multiple languages at Authorized TLC Driver Education Providers starting October 1, 2021. Eligible TLC-Licensed drivers can also take the TLC Driver License Renewal Course, instead of the NYS Defensive Driving Course to reduce points on their TLC Driver License.

Please note: There is an additional fee for the TLC Driver License Renewal Course. Participating drivers must pay the Authorized TLC Driver Education Provider directly for the cost of the course. For more information, please visit www.nyc.gov/tlcdrivereducation or email education@tlc.nyc.gov.
