A study of near-real-time traffic activity in downtown areas showed most large U.S. cities have not returned to pre-2020 levels – a lasting side effect of remote work. New York City, which has the most job-dense downtown area in the nation, was the only outlier in the report, which examined 20 downtown districts.
Conducted by traffic and transportation technology firm, INRIX, the study showed NYC traffic was only 5% below 2019 levels, although the city’s public transit is still down 28%. One of the report’s data points looked at traffic activity from December 2022 to May 2023, which showed a 13% increase in NYC traffic.
