In an op-ed that ran in amNY in March, Matthew W. Daus, Esq. addressed the city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) over what he considers the likelihood that Trump will be successful in killing congestion pricing. The following are quotes from that article.
“Governor Hochul cited economic recovery as a reason for the delay in congestion pricing last year, but what about the recovery of the taxi and FHV industry on which so many of us rely? Trump and/or Congress will likely be successful over time – one way or the other – in halting congestion pricing. However, there are legitimate concerns that when this happens, the MTA and the state legislature may once again treat the taxi and for-hire vehicle industry as an ATM, by making-up for lost revenue through an increased congestion surcharge. This cannot happen again!
“Before the MTA looks for funding elsewhere, it should first take a hard look at the efficiency of the agency and make extensive cuts to any waste or unnecessary expenditures…. Rather than fight this battle further in court, maybe New York should put the future of ‘congestion pricing’ and the ‘congestion surcharge’ to a vote via referendum?!”
