For over 20 years, The Black Car Fund (BCF) has provided Worker’s Compensation for FREE to all eligible New York for-hire drivers, paid for via a small passenger surcharge on every ride – covering drivers that are have a passenger in their vehicle or have accepted a fare and are on route to picking up a passenger assigned by a Member Base. Now, the BCF has expanded Drivers Benefits to also include Accident Disability Coverage while outside of work.
This new program provides Enrolled Drivers with monthly payments, for up to a year, who are injured and become disabled while NOT working – whether you are at home, at play, or even in-between fares.
Underwritten by Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Company, the income protection is universal, providing valuable income protection should a disabling accident occur, as the result of a non-work-related accident. This plan covers you 24/7 for any covered accident that leaves you disabled and unable to work – as long as you drive an average of at least 10 hours per week performing essential duties as a driver for wage or profit with a participating Black Car Fund Member Base.
Monthly Benefit Amount: Up to $1,500 per month, not to exceed 70% of your pre-disability net driving income
Minimum Monthly Benefit: $500 per month
Elimination Period: The benefit will be paid after a 30-day elimination period
Maximum Payment Period: 1 year for a Disability caused by an accident
Some exclusions do apply, including – but not limited to – illness, accident, treatment, or medical condition caused while participating in a felony, service in the Armed Forces, or an intentionally self-inflicted injury.
