New data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on fatal car crashes between 2017 and 2021 revealed the U.S. counties where pedestrians are most at risk. Although Alexandria, Va. had the highest percentage of pedestrian fatalities at 60% (15 out of 25 total traffic deaths) and San Francisco County, Calif. was fourth, with 76 pedestrian fatalities out of 154 traffic deaths (49.35%), the remaining eight counties were in either New York or New Jersey.

With 92 pedestrian deaths out of 178 traffic fatalities, New York County, NY came in at #2 (51.69%). Kings County, NY was #3, with 167 pedestrian fatalities out of 327 traffic deaths (51.07%). Richmond County, NY was #5, with 24 pedestrian deaths out of 49 traffic fatalities (48.98%). Queens County, NY was 6th, with 159 pedestrian deaths or 46.36% of its total traffic fatalities. Essex County, NJ was #7, with 106 pedestrian fatalities (46.29%). Hudson County, NJ was #8, with 56 pedestrian deaths, or 46.28% of the county’s traffic fatalities. Union County, NJ was #9, with 65 pedestrian deaths, or 45.14% of its total traffic fatalities. Bergen County, NJ rounded out the top 10, with 79 pedestrian fatalities (44.13%).
