Taxi and app-hail drivers often have to deal with problematic riders, and they also have to watch out for signs of danger or illicit activities. Robotaxi operators are expected to monitor for the same things, lest their vehicles end up being used as getaway cars or vessels for human trafficking.
Their solution? Cameras and microphones.
Waymo taxis are equipped with on-board communications systems that allow the company’s staff to speak with riders, which means those cameras are paired with microphones designed to pick up human voices that are capable of recording every word. Waymo’s user agreement says that any information it collects can be shared with both law enforcement and regulators. Zoox and Tesla have similar language in their user agreements, according to Wired.
