An electric vehicle’s (EV’s) powertrain may be completely different from a typical gas-powered vehicle, but there are some commonalities when it comes to operating in frigid temperatures. EV batteries “lose their charge much faster when the temperature drops,” experts say – so you should allow your EV to warm up for optimal performance. This means either using keys or an app to remote start your EV, allowing the cabin and mechanical components to acclimate before use.
Starting your EV while it’s charging can also “preserve power and battery range,” according to AAA. Taking a few minutes to warm up your vehicle while it’s plugged in is the best way to start your drive, ensuring you have as much driving range as possible. You can also adjust the cabin climate so it’s warmer, then turn the heat down as you drive to conserve battery power.
